Joe’s piece in the entry consists of over 250 4″x4″ paintings, inspired by the fireplace tiles found in older Cincinnati homes. He built up layers of paint, often sanding through multiple coats to add a richness, depth, and uniqueness to each piece. We painted a like-colored background band for the tiles creating a wainscot-like effect.
We set up a worktable in the living room for Joe to work on the layout:
Love these painted tiles what’s the substrate he painted on?
Baltic plywood, half inch thick. The top tiles are bull-nosed. The piece wasn’t made specifically for the square house but it feels like a perfect fit.
